There’s just something magical about having friends and family over for a cozy evening at home. Whether it’s a spontaneous get-together or a little gathering you’ve been planning, entertaining at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, I love making it feel laid-back and welcoming rather than stuffy or over-the-top. I’m all about making things look not so much fancy but curated without spending so much money.

Here’s my easy guide on how to entertain at home – 6 tips that I personally swear by to help you prep, host, and enjoy without the stress.

1. Decide How Many Guests to Invite ( Ask Yourself These Questions)

Before you start planning anything, ask yourself a few simple questions to help set the tone for the night:

How many people can I realistically host without feeling overwhelmed?
For me, the sweet spot is 9 people – 3 couples and us. It’s enough to feel fun and full, but not chaotic.

How do I keep my house guest ready?
A quick tip? Keep clutter to a minimum in the main areas, have clean hand towels in the bathroom, and a stash of sparkling water or wine ready to go just in case someone drops by last minute.

What do I do when people come to my house?
Greet them warmly, offer them a drink right away, and point them to where they can relax. I always like to have music playing and a candle lit before the first knock on the door – those little touches go a long way in making people feel at home.

How can I be entertaining to people?
Don’t overthink it! Being present, showing genuine interest, and keeping the conversation light and inclusive goes a long way. And remember – you don’t need to be the entertainment. Good vibes, great appetizers, and making sure everyone feels seen and welcomed are what people remember most.

Will everyone have a place to sit or stand comfortably?
This one’s big! I always do a quick walk-through of my space before inviting people over. If seating is tight, I’ll bring in a bench from another room, use floor poufs, or even set out a couple of cute pillows for a casual vibe. And if we’re doing more of a mingle-style night, standing is totally fine – just make sure there are spots to set down drinks and snacks. Comfort over perfection every time!

Do I have enough glassware or dishes?
If you’re not sure – count ahead of time. I’ve definitely been there with mismatched wine glasses and one too many guests. But you know what? Nobody minds! I always say, don’t stress if it’s not matchy-matchy. short glasses, stemless glasses, or even cute disposables work in a pinch. I also love mixing in fun appetizer plates or even using little cutting boards as individual plates or trays. It’s part of the charm!

Can I prep enough food and drinks without stressing?
Yes – and here’s how: keep it simple and plan ahead. I prep as much as I can the day before, especially anything that can be chilled, chopped, or baked. For drinks, I’ll make one big-batch signature cocktail or mocktail and have a self-serve station ready to go. When you’re not doing everything last minute, you get to enjoy the evening too. And remember: it’s totally okay to mix in a few store-bought favorites. Hosting should feel fun, not like a full-time job.

Table Design Tip

Brighten up your summer table with fresh fruit and vibrant blooms! Try slicing a grapefruit in half and pairing it with oranges or lemons for an easy, colorful centerpiece. Add a clear glass vase filled with bold, fresh florals to bring even more cheerful pops of color. It’s a simple and beautiful way to create a laid-back yet eye-catching summer spread!

2. Create a Cozy Atmosphere with Candles and a Great Playlist

Let’s be real: lighting and music set the tone for the entire evening. Before guests arrive, I light my favorite candles (I love something soft and not too overpowering), and put on a playlist that fits the vibe – chill acoustic, smooth jazz, or fun indie beats depending on the crowd. Spotify has so many ready-made playlists, so you don’t even have to think twice. I love to choose a playlist that matches the food or theme ( if you have one ). Dinner Party playlist, Lofi Beats, Bossa Nova are my go-to searches on Spotify! Should I create my own playlist? Let me know!

3. Go Tapas-Style Instead of a Fancy Dinner

Skip the three-course meal. Seriously. One of my favorite ways to serve food is tapas-style or small plates. Think: cheese boards, mini sliders, skewers, dips, and salads in small bowls. It’s low pressure and allows people to graze as they mingle.

Even better? You can prep most of it ahead of time and enjoy the night with your guests, not stuck in the kitchen.

4. Stick to Easy Appetizer Recipes That You Know Work

Don’t try a brand-new recipe the night of the party. Use go-to appetizers you’ve made before or ones that are simple and crowd-pleasing.

5. Offer a Signature Drink + Something for the Non-Drinkers

I always say: good food, comfy spots to sit or stand, and good drinks are the keys to a great gathering. Make one signature cocktail ( or mocktail! ) that fits your theme or season, and set it up on a cute bar cart or kitchen corner with mixers and garnishes. Don’t forget sparkling water or a festive non-alcoholic option for guests who aren’t drinking!

6. Tidy the Day Before (Your Future Self Will Thank You)

Clean your space the day before the party. Wipe down surfaces, fluff the pillows, vacuum, and get the dishes ready. It makes such a difference to wake up the day of and not be rushing around. Then, all you have to do is light a candle, turn on your music, and start plating!

Hosting Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect

It just has to feel warm, intentional, and relaxed. People remember how you made them feel way more than how spotless your baseboards were.

So go ahead – invite a few close friends, throw together a few easy bites, light some candles, press play on your favorite playlist, and enjoy your home to the fullest.
