Somehow, Instagram has changed from a place to share casual photos of your dog to a glamorous editorial magazine version of your everyday life. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Instagram and appreciate how the app connects like minded creatives and enables me to share the beautiful parts of my life. The thing I don’t love? How exhausting it can be to keep up with having a “good feed.”
If you’ve ever felt like me and wanted to create a beautiful, cohesive feed, but not at the expense of your sanity and free time, you’re in the right place. Today I’m going to share some simple and effective tips for creating a consistent Instagram feed that anyone can implement. Whether you’re a busy mom, a hustling entrepreneur or a college student — having a beautiful Instagram feed is possible. And you know what’s also possible? Not letting Instagram algorithms and editing intrude on your everyday life.
Intentional and consistent editing can make a world of difference when it comes to your feed. Picking one filter to edit with not only makes your feed cohesive, but also simplifies the editing process as well. Spend some time figuring out what kind of edit makes you the happiest — then stick with it! Apps like VSCO Cam and Lightroom allow you to copy and paste edits, which means you’ll spend less time editing and more time living that amazing life you share photos of.
Everyone has a specialty. Maybe you take awesome photos of coffee or share incredible scenic shots. Are you a fashion blogger or a food blogger? If so, then post about that! Settle on a couple things that you really love to share and focus on those. You don’t have to be an expert at everything, but it’s great to have a couple of key types of high quality content that you love to create and that you do well.
Ever had someone ask you what your favorite color is? Well that’s because we ALL have colors that we naturally gravitate toward. Whether it’s steel blue or sunrise pink, no doubt you have a color palette that you love. Take a look through your home and wardrobe and see what colors are consistently all around you —and then share those. Keeping everything on your Instagram within the same color palette creates a cohesive look. And if that color palette is one you’re naturally drawn to (even outside of Instagram!) it will be effortless to maintain.
Van Gogh probably didn’t create every piece of art with the intention of it hanging in a museum. The same goes for photos—not all of your amazing photos are destined to be on Instagram and that’s a beautiful thing. Allow yourself the space to create stunning content without feeling pressure to share EVERYTHING. Think of it as an art gallery – what would you want hanging up on the walls for people to see? It’s totally possible to be 100% authentic and genuine with what you post, while still creating an inviting gallery. Think of it as the Louvre of your life story. Share the masterpieces (abstract or realism) and save the snapchat selfies for a good group text.
If creating a cohesive Instagram feed has felt impossible or out of reach, I hope these tips help you see that it doesn’t have to be time consuming or take over your life. A couple of quick changes can result in a beautiful feed while still allowing you the freedom to enjoy life and not overthink it.
