Summer is ending and once 4th of July is over, it’s basically Fall right? When the seasons change, so does my decor and one of my favorite spots to update first is the console table. It’s a small but mighty styling moment that greets you (and your guests!) the minute you walk through the door. If your console is still rocking summer’s coastal or light tones, now’s the time to cozy it up for Fall, and don’t worry, I’m keeping it simple.

I grabbed everything for this Fall refresh at Target (yes, everything) and it completely transformed the feel of my space. Here’s how to transition your console table from Summer to Fall without going over the top and some questions answered about decorating too!

What month should you start decorating for Fall?

If you’re like me and count down the days until pumpkin everything, the urge to bring out the Fall decor hits early. I say go for it! Mid August to September is the sweet spot to start easing into cozy vibes. Think of it like a slow transition: swap out your summer stems for dried florals, add in some amber glass or moody candlelight, and bring in those warm, earthy tones. Even if the temps are still high (hey, Florida friends!), your home can still feel like Fall. No rules here…just decorate when it brings you joy!

What’s the difference between a sideboard and a console table?

Great question and they often get mixed up! A sideboard is typically deeper and used in dining rooms for extra storage (think: hiding all those serving dishes, placemats, or seasonal entertaining items). A console table is usually more shallow and decorative, designed for hallways, entryways, or behind sofas. It’s more about style and less about storage. Both are super versatile, I love using them throughout the home depending on the need!

1. Swap Out Your Stems for Warmer Hues

Start with what’s in your vase or jar. Those breezy summer greens? Time to trade them for deeper, richer tones. Think faux rust eucalyptus, burnt orange maple branches, or even dried pampas for a textured touch. These warm stems instantly set the tone for the season and are such an easy way to bring Autumn indoors.

2. Update Your Wall Art

Switching out the art above your console might seem like a big task but it makes a huge difference. I swapped my bright summery print for a moodier piece with Fall-toned landscapes, think trees, rolling hills, or even abstract earthy tones. Look for pieces with muted oranges, deep greens, browns, and taupes to add depth to the wall without overwhelming the space. Or even subtle pumpkin wall art!

How high should a picture be above a console table?

Here’s a good rule of thumb: the bottom of your picture or art piece should be about 6 to 8 inches above the top of your console table. This helps anchor the space and keeps everything visually connected. If you’re doing a gallery wall or using a mirror, just make sure the overall arrangement feels centered and doesn’t float too high above. You want your eye to follow a natural line from the table to the artwork cohesive and cozy.

3. Bring In Colored Candles

Taper candles or chunky jar candles in warm tones like amber, cinnamon, or taupe add that cozy glow we all crave once Fall hits. They also double as pretty decor, especially when placed in brass or wood holders for extra texture.

4. Layer in Small Fall-Inspired Accents

This is where you can have a little fun, without going full pumpkin patch. I added a small wooden bowl, a few stacked neutral books, and ceramic textures to balance out the soft glow of the candles and the richness of the stems. It’s all about layering without cluttering, creating a vibe, not a holiday explosion.

5. Keep It Simple + Intentional

I’m all about decor that feels intentional but relaxed. You don’t need to do a full overhaul, just a few thoughtful swaps make all the difference. These little updates can shift the whole vibe of your home and set the tone for the cozier months ahead.
