How To Style Open Shelves

Let’s talk shelf styling! If you’ve ever felt stuck on how to style open shelves in your living room, I’ve got you covered. Styling shelves doesn’t have to be complicated, I promise. It’s actually one of my favorite ways to add instant charm and warmth to a space, especially when you’re working with an earthy living room vibe like I love.

Most of my decor pieces? Yep, they’re from HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Target, Amazon, and Hobby Lobby – because creating a beautiful home shouldn’t break the bank. And I’m all about having that elevated look but knowing inside, I didn’t spend that much people!! Let me walk you through how to style shelves in your living room step-by-step, so you can bring your space to life with ease. Ok, here we go!

Start with a Blank Slate

First things first, clear off your shelves. I always like to start fresh so I can see the space clearly. It gives me a chance to play and see what feels right. Give them a good wipe down and you’re ready to style!

Keep Your Colors Neutral + Earthy

You know I’m all about those warm, natural tones! Choose a soft, earthy palette – think wood, whites, creams, a little black for contrast, and textures like linen and stone. Sticking to a color story helps everything feel pulled together. When it comes to adding color I usually stay within the blues and greens and anything warm, think nature, the beach, and what organic colors come to mind. You don’t want to add anything bold and bright like reds, purples, etc – you get the idea.

Curate with Intention

Let’s be honest, we all love a good HomeGoods find, but the key is choosing pieces that work together. Mixing small wall art, textural objects, books, and greenery creates interest without overwhelming. Keep things consistent. Two spots online I love for finding unique and earthy type wall art is Collection Prints and BFF Print shop!

Play with Height + Layers

This is where the magic happens! Stack books, add a little object on top, place taller vases or candlesticks next to shorter pieces. Floating shelves love dimension. Use pieces of different heights to guide the eye and give your shelves that layered, cozy look.

Use Natural, Organic Materials

Earthy textures add that instant warmth. Think woven baskets, clay pots, wood beads, stone accents – these pieces bring a soft, organic feel that works beautifully in a boho living room or neutral space.

Don’t Forget the Greenery

Whether it’s a small plant or a draping faux vine, greenery adds life! A little touch here and there really finishes off the look and ties your shelves into the rest of your space. I love to add draping greenery on a corner of a shelf and smaller ones on the side of a wall art to tie it all in. Here are some drippy faux plant finds I love: Faux Pothos Plant, Peperomia Draping, Faux String of Pearls

Step Back + See the Big Picture

This is my favorite part! As you style, step back every now and then to see how everything is flowing. You want balance, texture, and pieces that feel like they belong. Whether you’re styling a small living room, always take a look from a distance and adjust as you go.

A Few Quick Tips:

  • Use longer decor to stretch the eye across the shelf.
  • Group items in 3’s – it always looks natural!
  • Let the room breathe, don’t overcrowd.
  • Don’t add personal framed photos – I believe these little treasures are best placed in a special spot in the hallway, an accent wall, bedroom or somewhere else where guests can check out your family photos.
