Our Living Room Renovation

When we first moved into our home, the living room was super simple and the main wall was empty so I knew I wanted to add some depth with a custom built-in and shelves! Well, it’s finally finished and I’m so excited to share the transformation of our living room reveal! It’s been a work in progress, but now it has all the cozy coastal vibes I’ve been dreaming of. If you’re like me, you love mixing relaxed, Pacific Coast meets Earthy elements with a touch of sophistication. Our living room now feels like the perfect blend of Arizona desert and the Pacific Coast – warm, inviting, and full of neutral charm. Plus, our new sofa from Ashley Furniture is the perfect addition to tie everything together.

Check out where we started below! I also chose to paint our walls with Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore in Satin. I love the neutral tone it has so it goes great in any style of space or lighting.

Comfort Meets Style in Florida

The first step to creating a coastal-inspired living room is choosing the right furniture. We went with designer living room furniture without the designer price tag. Our new Modmax sofa by Ashley Furniture is the perfect + comfy find. The light, neutral color of the sofa keeps the room feeling airy and spacious, while still offering a cozy, lived-in vibe. It’s also ideal for our Florida home since it fits perfectly into the relaxed coastal style we were aiming for. This Modmax 3-Piece Modular Performance Fabric Sofa in Oyster offers the perfect balance of comfort and coastal charm, ideal for lounging or hosting guests.

Earthy and Boho Rugs

Let’s talk about the rug – this was a big decision in our living room makeover. I was on the hunt for the perfect earthy living room rug, and I found it with the Loloi x Amber Lewis rug. It gives our living room that perfect Arizona/Pacific Coast feel with its warm tones and boho texture. This boho living room rug has just the right amount of character without being overpowering. Its soft neutrals, bold pops of warm brown and charcoal and subtle patterns create a serene, inviting foundation in the room that I love.

Small Space Living Room Decor Ideas

If your living room is on the smaller side like ours, don’t stress – it’s possible to make the most of a small space without sacrificing style. Here are a few of my favorite small space living room decor ideas: First, keep your color palette light and airy. Stick to whites, soft greys, and beige for a calm, open feel. Second, choose multi-functional furniture like our sofa that offer both style and practicality. Third, mirrors can help open up the space and create a sense of depth. Lastly, don’t overcrowd the room with furniture – leave space for movement and breathing room.

Faux Stone Fireplace & Plaster Textured Walls

One of the highlights of our living room is the fireplace. We decided to use faux stone for the fireplace, which gives it that rustic, natural feel without the hefty price tag of real stone. The plaster textured walls add a unique element to the space – subtle, but they really make a statement. For painting textured walls, I recommend using light, neutral shades to keep everything cohesive with the room’s vibe. The combination of the tile stone look and plaster gives our soace a grounded, organic feel, perfect for our earthy-inspired style. I found this gorgeous tile at Floor & Decor, I love how it turned out!

I’m just a wee bit obsessed with our new accent pillows! If you haven’t heard of Textileish Designs, let me introduce you! Built-In Cabinet in the Living Room

To maximize our living room space, we opted for a built-in cabinet in the living room. It’s the perfect way to add custom style while keeping the room organized. This built-in storage allows us to display books, plants, and decorative items that really personalize the space. Plus, it doesn’t take up too much floor space, which is essential for smaller homes. I’ve added a few coastal touches – like glass jars, ceramic vases, and some greenery – to make the built-in cabinet feel warm and inviting.

Notes from our contractor about our Built-In:

We used Marmorino Plaster for the texture of our built-in, for the wood we used Maple and Behr stain called “Dark Walnut”. The cabinets are frame-less with minimal reveals and soft closing doors.

4 Tips for Styling Living Room Shelves

Styling your living room shelves can be a fun way to express your personality and add some character to your space. Here are four simple tips for styling your shelves in a Florida living room:

  1. Create Balance: Use a mix of heights and textures. Combine large books or vases with smaller items like plants or decorative trinkets to create visual interest.
  2. Incorporate Greenery: Real plants are essential in a Florida living room. They bring the outside in and give the space life.
  3. Keep It Simple: Don’t overcrowd your shelves. Less is more – focus on a few key pieces that stand out.
  4. Use Natural Materials: Wood, woven baskets, and ceramic pieces give the shelves a warm, earthy vibe that perfectly complements boho living.
