I wasn’t a big fan of decorating my mantle in the past because I just couldn’t find simple garlands, but lucky for you I have found the perfect one for my Fall decorating that doesn’t scream fake looking! When it comes to fall decorating, I like to keep things simple, minimal, and oh-so-cozy. Why decorate your mantle? Think of it as the backdrop to your autumn season kicking off in your home, whether you’re enjoying a quiet coffee at home or hosting a little dinner party with friends.

This year, I grabbed the most beautiful and simple (which I love) fall garland from World Market, and let me tell you, it adds just the right amount of seasonal charm without being over the top. I’m not into the bright, loud, faux pumpkins and neon orange overload. Instead, I love sticking to a soft, neutral color palette, creamy whites, muted browns, and hints of warmth that feel natural and inviting.

Tip: Use Command Strip clips to hold your garland in place, it can be frustrating if anything moves and the garland falls or worse, everything. Keep it stable! I usually use 2-3 depending on how many needed.

Setting the Fall Mood with a Digital Touch

Here’s a little decorating idea that might surprise you: I use YouTube as my seasonal screensaver. Yep! I’ll pull up a cozy fall scene a crackling fireplace, leaves falling, or a charming farmhouse kitchen and let it play on my TV. It instantly sets the autumn mood in my home during the day or makes the perfect background when hosting. It’s like a home tour moment every time I walk into the dining room. Just open up your youtube app and search for “Autumn Backgrounds” or “Fall Screensavers”.

Candlelight Magic

To keep things extra cozy, I placed two candle holders on each end of the mantle. Instead of worrying about wax or fire hazards, I went with LED battery-operated candles. They give that same soft twinkle, and they’re so easy to switch on before guests arrive. Honestly, nothing says fall like a little warm glow it’s like a built-in centerpiece for your decor. Since our fireplace is faux, it works perfect!

Simple & Minimal: Less Is More

Fall doesn’t have to mean clutter. A strand of garland, a few pumpkins tucked in (think soft, white or fabric ones), and a couple of glowing candles can completely transform your space. Pair that with cozy textures around the dining room table like a linen table runner or a layered place setting, and you’re set for the season. These little DIY projects are what make decorating fun without going overboard.

If you’re aiming for that farmhouse-meets-modern look, try mixing soft, beautiful neutrals with a touch of rustic wood. It keeps things easy, elegant, and timeless.

Fall Decor Q&A

How do you decorate tastefully for fall?
Tasteful fall decorating is all about keeping it simple and intentional. Instead of piling on every pumpkin you can find, choose a few neutral pieces you really love like a soft garland, a couple of candle holders, and maybe one or two unique pumpkins for texture. Stick to a warm color palette (think creams, browns, muted greens, and golds) and layer in cozy details like a linen table runner on your dining room table or a minimal wreath on your door. Less is more!

When should you put up fall decor?
I personally love easing into fall decor as early as August. It’s that perfect transition time when summer is winding down, but you’re craving cozy vibes. Start small add a simple mantle garland or a soft autumn table centerpiece and then layer in more as September and October roll in.

What kind of wreath is good for August-Sept?
For August to September, go with something that feels light and transitional, think dried eucalyptus, wheat, or neutral pampas grass. These styles don’t scream “pumpkin patch” yet, but they give that soft, beautiful seasonal touch. A warm neutral tones works perfectly and can carry you all the way through fall.

How many items should be on a fireplace mantle?
Honestly, balance is everything! I recommend three to five main pieces. For example: a garland, two candle holders, and maybe one statement piece (like a framed art print or a small pumpkin). Keep it simple so it doesn’t look cluttered your mantle should feel like a soft focal point, not an overstuffed shelf.
